Recognizing Signs That Your Loved One May Be Suffering From Addiction

In reality, people who are addicted to opiates do not look like the stereotype that you may have in your head of what a typical addict looks like. News of celebrities, politicians, soccer moms, or doctors being addicted to illegal substance may come as a shock to you because they would really not display any signs of addiction.

The signs of addiction can be very subtle and family and loved ones always seem to be the last to know. At one point you may have thought that the sudden change in habits or personality of your loved one could be an indicator that they are using, but chances are you just shrugged off the thought thinking that it is so unlike him/her to be like that. Don’t wait to confirm your suspicions until it is too late. Your addicted loved one needs help and here are some ways to tell or confirm if they are using. The earlier you know, the faster you can get help for them to help them recover.

Change in mood and behavior

An addict will usually have extreme mood swings, displaying sudden shift from extreme happiness to depression. You may also notice that all of a sudden, your loved one seems withdrawn and is spending more and more time alone and prefers isolation over the company of friends or family.

An addicted person will also seem tired all the time and lacks energy. This makes them miss school and work and they lose focus and motivation. Drugs impair one’s thinking and this is the reason why an addict can seem distracted and can easily lose their concentration. If your child has always performed well in school and suddenly brings home low grades, then you should start investigating into his habits. If your loved one has been failing to meet deadlines at work or is suddenly laid off due to poor performance, then look closer for more signs of addiction so that you can offer to help the soonest time possible.

Change in appearance and health condition

For some, it is very easy to tell addiction with the sudden change in the way they look and how they look after themselves. A once well-groomed person can easily turn into a slob because of addiction. Drugs can affect the sleeping and eating patterns of a person and this can take a toll on their health and becomes very apparent in their appearance. Sudden weight loss and disinterest in personal grooming can be signs of addiction.

If you are able to look closely, one sure sign of addiction is having pinpoint pupils. This is when the pupils remain dilated even in dim surroundings. Addicts will exhibit flu like symptoms almost every time, you may notice that they have runny nose and watery eyes that will not go away. They may also frequent the ER for different reasons.

Lies, lies, and more lies

Addiction is a habit that will drain a person financially because they have no control over wanting to get a fix even if their finances cannot sustain it anymore. They simply cannot control it because the craving in their bodies are so painful that they have to give in. If you notice that bills are all of a sudden getting unpaid, if your savings were used up, if you are suddenly missing money in your wallet or losing valuable items in the house then addiction could be responsible for this.
